Augmented Reality in Education

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that is gradually becoming part of our lives, sitting in different areas. This technology allows us to combine virtual elements to the real physical environment, resulting in a mixed reality, without replacing the physical reality. This provides us a different perspective to give us the opportunity to develop different activities. It is necessary to use a device (Smartphone, tablet, game console, PC …) with a screen, a camera and any Augmented Reality software. Thus information becomes digital and interactive. One area where the use of the AR is really interesting is education, to be used, for example, in displays, museums or theme parks, but also in the classrooms. But how can we use Augmented Reality in the educational-teaching field? Here are some possible examples:

    • It could improve the interactivity of textbooks, being able to visualize 3D objects, providing a new perspective about different topics and incorporating exercises in which they can explore these objects. For example, architecture associated elements may be displayed as a complete three-dimensional construction, instead of providing the elevation profile and plan of giving greater ease of viewing the user. Moreover, in a more general way, it could be integrated into various subjects such as science, mathematics, languages, physical education, etc.. The only limit depends on the imagination of the teacher, who is the person that will motivate students and will teach them through discovery.
    • Pupils can see virtual 3D objects, but also interact with them. For example, this allows them to see the solar system, select the Sun and discover the different layers of the Sun.
    • Using geolocation AR can provide information about the physical location, create geolocation based on that or design itineraries on certain points of interest scenarios.
    • It could be used as a supplement to support the development of certain business activities, for example in the field of medicine, mechanics or industrial processes. Companies are starting to use Augmented Reality to reduce the time required to learn how to do different tasks.

In conclusion, this technology allows the user to enhance the learning of certain educational content through its partnership with the real world in order to promote the discovery-based learning.
